You Can't Afford Not To!
Fact # 1 -90% of the population claims they feel overwhelmed by the lack of time today. It is considered the number one stressor, and a worldwide phenomenon.
Fact # 2 -Medical researchers estimate that close to 90% of illness and disease is stress-related. The leading six causes of death in the U.S., which include heart disease, cancer, accidents and suicide, are all linked to stress.
Fact # 3 -Employee stress has become a major drain on corporate resources, productivity and competitiveness. $300 billion ($7,500 per employee) is spent annually in the U.S. on stress-related compensation claims, reduced productivity, absenteeism, health insurance, medical expenses and employee turnover.
Fact # 4 -Employers underestimate the impact stress and life/work balance has on turnover. Employees rank stress as the top reason they would leave, but it is not even among the top 5 reasons cited by most employers. The cost of replacing a mid to high level associate is estimated at 200-250% of their annual salary.
Fact # 5 - The number one issue for working parents today is balancing work and family. A roundtable of top HR executives from some of the largest corporations in the US admit that after a decade of on site child-care, flexible hours and other work/life balance services, parents are still experiencing high levels of guilt and stress.
People tend to blame work for the stress they are experiencing, but work isn’t necessarily the problem. It’s the fast paced, technological world we live in that offers too many choices and too many opportunities, all the while expecting us to be good at everything we do. Working hard and being busy isn’t necessarily stressful. We feel stressed-out because we have too many “things to do” and no time left at the end of the day to connect with each other and enjoy the important things in life.
Recent studies show that children do not object to their parents working, but they do object to how stressed they are at home. Parents need help dealing with the stress so they can provide a happyhome for their children. Family life science studies have found “five protective factors” that not only help strengthen family connections but decrease stress for all family members. It’s not about how much time we spend with our loved ones, it’s about what we do with that time. Anyone can be successful at work and a great parent, too.
